
Lecanto
The community of Lecanto lies midway between Inverness and Crystal River at the intersection of SR 44 and CR 491.
South of the intersection is where the post office, the county government complex, the Lecanto school complex and the Senior Citizen Center is located.
The Withlacoochee State Forest is located nearby between CR 491 and 581. The forest is 123,240 acres of wooded land with hiking trails, horse trails, camping, picnic shelters and fishing.
Located on CR 491, the county government complex houses the Department of Public Works. Operating within the department are the divisions of road maintenance, fleet management and aquatic services. The following departments are also housed in the complex: the Department of Developmental Services with the divisions of developmental planning, zoning and permits and fire prevention; Community Services with the Division of Human Services, Public Health Department, Parks and Recreation and Library Services. The county jail is also located in Lecanto.
HRS environmental services is also located in the government complex along with the Department of Technical Services. The divisions of engineering, management services, public utilities and the division of building.
The division of Solid Waste Management is also located in Lecanto on SR 44.
For those who are over 60 years of age, there is a place in Lecanto where they can find companionship and fun. The Senior Citizens Center offers activities from line dancing to health related lectures. Pool players, card players, dancers, and readers will be found daily at the Center. A monthly schedule of activities is posted so everyone will know what is going on. The Lecanto Center is also a site for congregate dining.
The Citrus County Canning Center is available for use at no charge, and is located at 3405 West Southern Street in Lecanto, just north of the Lecanto traffic light on SR 491. The canning center opened during the Depression era to allow people to have a safe place to process their own food.
The center is open full time May 1 - June 30 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. until 12 noon on Saturdays. If you bring your own produce and supplies the equipment is available at the Center, however, it must be in the center by 2 p.m.; any other time you may make an appointment.
